What is a Bridal Petticoat?

Every bride-to-be knows that having the perfect bridal wear is a key ingredient for that special wedding day. And when the topic of bridal wear is up, petticoats, crinolines and bridal slips are sure to be mentioned. In fact, these are all the same article of clothing. A bridal petticoat’s fullness underneath the skirt of the gown is what gives the wedding dress its unique look. Wearing one will make sure that there will be no excess folding and drooping anywhere on the wedding gown.

The petticoat, or bridal slip, is an underskirt that hangs from the waist and is intentionally designed to be a bit stiff. This is what gives the petticoat the ability to add fullness to the wedding dress or formal gown worn over it. Wearing a petticoat creates a shapely figure as well as a slimmer waistline.

Petticoats have been around for centuries but have been diminishing in popularity outside of the wedding industry. However, they are not likely to become totally extinct as petticoats paired with full skirts keep returning to the fashion scene.

You may also hear the term crinoline used to refer to a petticoat. Petticoats were originally made from a material combination of horsehair and linen, which were marketed for their stiffness and strength. As this material was exclusively used for the production of stiff petticoats, they became known as crinolines, which distinguished them from the softer silk and taffeta petticoats.

If you would like an ultra feminine yet sexy look on your wedding day, simply find the petticoat or bridal slip that works for your wedding gown. Wearing one will provide the beautiful silhouette that every bride should have.
